Capsule Wardrobe Essentials for New Mums

As I type this, I am nearly 9 months pregnant and feeling very disengaged from fashion and the way I look. Understandably, my clothes don’t fit me in the way they used to and I feel frumpy, uninspired and at this point, I’m just throwing on whatever makes me feel comfortable rather than clothes that make me feel good about myself and my style.

So, I’m going to make some subtle changes

I have spent the last couple of weeks, whilst I’m transitioning into a new phase of my life, to really think about what I want my style to look like. I’m 32 years old so I’ve definitely grown out of the fast fashion, buy and wear once mentality that I probably had when I was in my twenties. My mantra is quite simple nowadays – not every event needs a new outfit and ‘buy cheap, buy twice’ is a real thing. I’m spending time putting together outfits featuring staple, ‘capsule’ pieces that can be moved around depending on the occasion.

it’s not going to be an overnight transition

I’d love to say that I have a spare £2000 available to just completely overall my wardrobe and invest in all of the beautiful pieces I’ve been eyeing up as part of this process, but with a baby weeks away from being born, that’s completely unsustainable. Instead, I’ve been decluttering what I currently own and reinvesting the money I earned there in staple pieces that I can wear with different items, some of which I already own.

I’m also conscious that I have to be considerate of the season we’re entering. Summer is coming up (and frankly, it’s already here with the amount of heatwaves that are going on in the UK at the moment), so rather than overwhelm myself by trying to declutter and upgrade every aspect of my wardrobe in one go, I’m instead splitting into seasons and picking up just a pieces that I’ll be able to mix and match with other bits that I own. The pieces that I’m purchasing are from high quality brands and I’m doing lots of research into the different ways I can wear them to really get the best out of them – whilst keeping in mind the way I want to feel when I put on the clothes.

It’s very much a work in progress

But I’m really excited to see how things look on me and whether I start to feel like the version of me that I’m dreaming of.
